Piltene is an ancient town in Northern part of Kurzeme, situated next to the former riverbed of the river Venta, 22 km from Ventspils. It is famous for being the main town of Kurzeme bishopric from the end if XIII cent.
The ruins of Piltene castle have still remained, but now next to them are standing open-air stage and picnic arbour.

Nearby the castle there is Piltene Lutheran Church. Supposedly, materials from the castle were used to build and rebuild (1856) church.Evidence of history of Piltene remained in the Museum of Piltene. Two rooms in the museum store exposition, third is used for exhibitions.
