Vasarnīcu Street was formed as a distant echo of the idea of the popular "garden city" concept, following the then widely popular approach to European urban development. Although completely new garden cities in the 20th century's first decades were created in small numbers (mainly in England and Germany), the idea of garden cities was very popular at that time. One of the early manifestations of this idea is the Riga Forest Park, the former Ķeizarmežs (Kaiserwald), which in 1901 was decided to be built as a city recreation park with residential buildings. Almost at the same time, a similar project is being implemented in Ventspils - next to Ostgals, in the direction of Kaziņmežs, a new type of building adopted by the wealthiest inhabitants of the fast-growing city, Vasarnīcu Street, is developing. There are spacious plots of land with modern, more summer-friendly wooden buildings, surrounded by gardens and greenery. Nearby is an unspoilt sea beach, forest, recreation-oriented natural environment. The crowded construction in the Old Town is acceptable in the cold months of the year, but summer allows the wealthiest Ventspils residents to look for more modern living solutions. A modern solution for a city that has grown beyond the crowded, old-fashioned urban planning dictated by the Hanseatic period and the Duchy period.

The exhibition "Vasarnīcu Street" is not just a message about new ideas in the city's construction. It is a story about buildings, a story about lifestyle, families, people and their destinies. A story dedicated to the most dynamic part of the street of the last century from the so-called Swedish rampart area until the beginning of Kaziņmežs. Ventspils Museum historians and exhibition scenic designer Mārtiņš Kalseris invite museum visitors to take a shared, leisurely stroll along Vasarnīcu Street, looking at the windows of the houses, whose colored glass hide the moments of Ventspils summer residents' past.

The exhibition is placed in the exhibition hall of the Castle of the Livonian Order from November 12, 2020 to October 2021.
