Crafts Festival “House of Crafts – 15” at the Ventspils House of Crafts (Skolas iela 3) on 30 July from 11:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m.
When in early August 2007 the new addition to the Ventspils Museum (the House of Crafts) was opened in the historic and reconstructed oldest school building in Kurzeme, with the aim of preserving the intangible cultural heritage (crafting traditions), hardly anyone guessed how many different workshops, projects, and exciting events this relatively small 18th century building and those occupying it would host over the next fifteen years. To draw attention of both artisans and wider public to the 15th anniversary of the House of Crafts, the Crafts Festival is to take place on 30 July from 11:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m., boldly extending from the cozy courtyard of the House of Crafts to nearby Skārņu iela, while from 9:00 a.m. on the street leading to the nearby Ventspils Market, crafts and other products will be sold and purchased.
Throughout the day, there will be carpentry competitions for both professional potters and those brave enough to take up the challenge in the category open to everyone. Everyone will be able to visit the photographers in the darkroom and to discover the secrets of making a cyanotype. The co-creation project "Scarf for Latvia", which has already reached the weight of 30 kg, will also include a tribute to the House of Crafts. In honour of Kurzeme's culinary heritage, 'žograuši' ('sklandrauši' or carrotcakes) will be prepared on the street along the whole length of the fence. The folk music ensemble "Tals'trimiš'", the soloist of the band "Otra puse" Normunds Pauniņš, and the Ventspils men's choir group led by Lorija Cinkuss are set to perform in the festival, including the middle generation dance groups "Usma" and "Tārgale" that will perform joyful dance steps to entertain themselves and others. An exhibition of works by regional craftsmen will also be on display in the House of Crafts.
