“Night of Ancient Bonfires” at Staldzene bluff
23.08.2022 - 10:06
On Saturday, 27 August at 9:00 p.m., we welcome everyone to experience the magic of the “Night of Ancient Bonfires” at Staldzene bluff, which has become a popular tradition around the Baltic Sea. We will light bonfires symbolizing the unity of the nations around the sea, care for the sea and nature, and farewell to the summer. Various musical performances will contribute to the atmosphere.

At Staldzene bluff, where the footbridge starts, the "Night of Ancient Bonfires" will offer an opportunity to experience the interaction between man and nature, thus feeling the connection with the sea that coastal nations have maintained for thousands of years. Enjoy the mood music performed by guitarist Reinis Jaunais and cellist Erna Daugaviete. Special atmosphere will be provided by Zuzanna Mohamed Rambo, the creator of the page "Ļauj Sev Būt", while the jazz ensemble "Intro" will gather everyone around the bonfire and entertain the audience, performing jazz standards, original compositions, as well as popular jazz melodies adapted by Sergej Somik.
Ancient bonfires were lit already in the Viking Age, thus showing sailors a safe way to the coast. Nowadays, the first bonfires as part of the traditional "Night of Ancient Bonfires" were lit in 1992 in Finland. Since 2010, this event has also been celebrated in Latvia on the last Saturday of August, with the aim of promoting the unity of the coastal nations and reminding of our history and cultural heritage.
