Chamber ensemble “Synaesthesis” to perform in Ventspils

On Sunday, 18 September, the well-known Vilnius-based ensemble “Synaesthesis” will perform at the season opening concert “Autumn Works” at the Concert Hall “Latvija” in Ventspils, offering their Baltic chamber music programme.
Since March 2019, while drawing boundaries in time and even eras, we have already seen "Summer Works" and "Autumn works". On 20 June 2020, after more than three months of shock in terms of being distant, locked away, and disconnected from music, the Concert Hall "Latvija" welcomed audiences once again, hosting the concert "Summer Works" with Reinis Zariņš, Vestards Šimkus, and the trio "Endless Roar". On 18 September of last year, the concert "Autumn Works" marked the beginning of the season with a double piano concert by Reinis Zariņš and US-based artist Vicky Chow. This year in mid-September, the Concert Hall "Latvija" will start the autumn season with works, more specifically, the chamber music opuses by Baltic composers all performed by "Synaesthesis".
At this two-part concert, which might as well be described as "The Baltic Sound", the ensemble "Synaesthesis" conducted by Karolis Variakojis will perform the Arvo Pärt's "Fratres" for piano and viola, the "Double bass journey" by Pēteris Vasks, and "Solastalgia" for clarinet, piano, violin, viola, and cello by the Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, who has managed to build her career in the international arena in a short amount of time. The second part of the concert will include a special audio-visual experience - the premiere of "Why Does This Appear?" by the composer Dominykas Digimas and the director Kristijonas Dirsė.

The audio-visual work "Why Does This Appear?" is a musical silent film that fuses staging and documentary, performance and storytelling, musical and cinematic means of expression. When creating this cross-genre work, the desire and the main task of the authors was to find the golden ratio between the mediums of music, image, and story, based on the nine most vivid memories of the seven protagonists of the film. True, the story is told without spoken words, using only the language of film and music. When telling and retelling these memories, they focus on different aspects, allowing the peculiarities of memories illuminate themselves. Even more so given that, as we all know, with the passage of time we recall the same event differently from how it happened. We make it seem prettier, skipping the essential details and thinking about it in a way we wish it would have happened and the other way round. In the "Why Does This Appear?", the boundary between silhouettes in the surreal and documented worlds disappears, and the protagonists of the newly created illusion are the musicians of the Vilnius Chamber Ensemble.
The Chamber Ensemble "Synaesthesis" is a relatively young collective of young artists, which has already managed to gain the respect of audiences and professionals alike, becoming the most prominent musical phenomenon in Lithuania in recent years. The ensemble, which is particularly interested in, but not limited to, new music, brings together ambitious, talented, and courageous musicians who have graduated or are still studying at the best European schools. They all share the same vision of sound fusing with other elements such as space, light, movement, and narrative so that professionally produced and performed music becomes a larger, broader, cross-genre experience for the audience and for the artists themselves, as evidenced by the constant collaboration with professionals from various fields and networking with accomplished musicians like "Ictus", "Klangforum Wien", "Quator Tana", and others. Given the regular concerts in Europe, the "Synaesthesis" has also earned recognition at national level in the recent years. They have been awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Composers' Union, have become the artistic ensemble of the City of Vilnius, and in 2020, received the Ernst von Siemens Ensemble Prize.
