The Chekhov Theatre will present an eccentric Woody Allen comedy at the "Jūras vārti" theatre.

The guest performance season at the "Jūras vārti" theatre will begin with the Moscow Chekhov Russian Theatre on Wednesday, January 29th, at 7:00 PM, offering the performance of Woody Allen's play "West of Central Park", staged by director Sergei Golomazov, for the audience's evaluation.
In the production of "West of Central Park", the cast will feature Jekaterina Frolova, Veronika Plotņikova, Shamil Hamatov, Igors Čerņavskis, Adriana Tatjana Začeste, Jūlija Berngardte, Konstantīns Ņikuļins, and Vladislavs Janušenoks. The performance will be accompanied by live music, provided by Vladimir Tuzov (keyboards), Dmitrijs Karpovs (bass guitar), Jūlija Saveļjeva (guitar), Antons Visockis (percussion), and Maksims Busels (vocals).
Works by the famous director, screenwriter, and playwright Woody Allen are not often seen in the repertoire of Latvian theatres. Theatre critic Armands Kalniņš recalls only two previous instances and thus calls Sergei Golomazov's production a special event in Latvian theatre life. "The play is cleverly written; potential critics might describe it as cynical, amoral, shameless, overly explicit, summing up with phrases like 'this doesn't happen in real life' or 'oh, how demoralized the affluent Western world is.' Although familiar characters and situations appear, each new plot twist brings attention to something unexpected, while the text sparkles with provocative wit. Interestingly, there are no overtly and hopelessly evil characters in the play, nor is there anyone who is flawless and 'perfectly right,'" Kalniņš notes, adding that not only the chosen material is worth highlighting but also the work done in staging it.Director Sergei Golomazov had been thinking about staging this Woody Allen play for a long time, until the circumstances finally aligned for the idea to be realized. "It's a witty, funny, even satirical play about those we call all-powerful or the masters of life. The theme is timeless because, on one hand, concepts like money, status, and reputation are still relevant, but on the other hand, there are eternal values-love, loyalty, honesty, nobility, politeness. Woody Allen plays with contrasts in general, so we also have much to play with in this production," says the director, promising that the audience will definitely laugh, but at the same time, it might also provoke deeper reflections.The performance will be in Russian with Latvian subtitles and is intended only for adult viewers (18+).Organized by SIA "Kurzeme Philharmonia" with financial support from the Ventspils City Municipality and the State Culture Capital Foundation. Tickets can be purchased at the "Latvia" concert hall box office and at all "Biļešu paradīze" sales points. The box office at the "Jūras vārti" theatre will be open one hour before the event.i
