According to the variety and number of bird species, Būšnieku Lake is considerably richer than other lakes in the northwest of Kurzeme. There are around 34 bird species around the lake which during the nesting time focuses on the SW part of Būšnieku Lake.
Conservation area Būšnieku Lake bank was established in 2004 to protect various biotopes of European importance and is 49 hectares large. In the same year when it was established, the co

Relaxation by the Būšnieku Lake is popular for families, fishermen and surfers. There are comfortable swimming and picnic areas, bicycle stands, boat rental at the boat rental base, but for the surfers convenience there are plank-ways installed. A trip to Būšnieku Lake can be combined with a nearby Deer Garden visit. The 32 hectare large Ventspils Deer Garden has been open since 2006 and is located near Būšnieku Lake, Talsu Street 240. When visiting the Deer Garden it is possible to watch wild animals from the watch tower - stags and fallow deer's in their natural habitat. The best time to see the residents of the Deer Garden is during feeding times. The garden can be easily accessed by car and has parking spaces. For better viewing of the animals during feeding time there are feeding stations located in the field and a watch tower. There are currently 27 animals in the Deer Garden - 5 fallow deer's and 22 stags.
